‘Land surveys at sea’
Building and maintaining structures in and close to the water calls for reliable information about the water column, water depth, seabed topography and the nature of soil. That information can only be obtained by means of specialist surveys. The surveys are performed by a hydrographer.
The hydrographer’s field of work
Hydrographers are found all over the world, from Norway to South Africa and from the Netherlands to China. The operating field of the hydrographic surveyor is anywhere a suitable volume of water exists. Since 70% of the globe is covered with water, this work field creates considerable opportunities.
Hydrographers are seconded by Atlas to numerous different industries, such as offshore construction, waterway contractors and dredging, engineering companies, and public authorities and suppliers. They are involved in projects such as:
- installing drilling islands
- laying and charting pipelines and cables
- dredging channels and harbours
- raising beaches
- building bridges and tunnels
- locating wrecks
- making hydrographic charts
